Self-Care?

➡️One of the biggest buzz words of the past year has been self-care, and, rightly so! This past year has offered all of us challenges of varying magnitude.

. . .

Discovering ways to take care of ourselves (so that we can take care of others) during challenging times is so important to our overall wellness!

. . .

I would argue that it is even more important to establish sustainable routines of self-care regardless of external circumstance. These routines can help us weather day-to-day life as well as the challenging seasons.

. . .

➡️What does self-care look like for you?

A run at sunrise.

Your skin care routine in the morning and evening.

A walk/hike or talk with a loved one.

Reading/listening to a good book.

Yoga in the park.

An epsom salt bath.

Journaling.

Punching a heavy bag.

. . .

➡️Self-care is going to look different for each of us, because each of us has unique needs and circumstances.

. . .

➡️Another argument that I would make is that we cannot “do” self-care if we do not know ourselves well.

. . .

✅Self-awareness and self-knowledge are critical to establishing a beneficial self-care routine.

. . .

➡️If we do not know ourselves well enough to know what we need to relax and restore, we can try all of the self-care fads and end up more fatigued and frustrated than we were when we started.

. . .

⭐️Here are three questions to ask yourself to create self-awareness around what self-care strategies will work best for you:

  1. What do I value about taking care of myself/why will I feel good about taking care of myself?

  2. Do I relax and restore best by myself or with others?

  3. Do I restore more effectively by slowing down and being still, or by moving in a focused and intentional way?

. . .
